HOW DOES IT WORK?

The core hardware technology powering XANDAR is IR-UWB RADAR which stands for impulse radio ultra wide band radar. It sends out 20,000 nano-pulses per second and gather valueable data to its surrounding. Micro movements and vibrations such as chest movement from breathing and heart beats are detected and monitored. This type of data provides the base information for presence detection used by XANDAR.

WHAT IS IT
IR-UWB stands for Impulse Radio Ultra Wide Band radar. It is essentially a very wide bandwidth (low emitted power) with lots of multipath at 500MhZ frequency.
HOW DOES IT WORK
IR-UWB emits very short energy pulses, typically on the order of hundreds of picoseconds, are transmitted with the use of a specially designed wideband antenna. XANDAR has developed a unique algorithm that can use IR-UWB to create adjacent thin layers vertically creating a “field” that can detect human presence.
KEY FUNCTIONS
XANDAR’s patented technology can detect and monitor occupancy (presence) by looking for breathing patterns of a person(s) or in the case of Level 3, heart beat. As it emits over 10 million pulses per second around its zone, it can also use 3D spatial data to create 1D data analytics such as counting number of people in a zone. Lastly, the system can also detect micro-fractures and objects as small as 0.7mm using its patented OSR technology.
HEALTH RISK-FREE
IR-UWB operates at a wide, but low bandwidth – 500Mhz. In other words, it emits less than 10,000th to 100,000th less signals than a typical wireless Wi-Fi router. It is completely health-risk free to use on a daily basis.

WHAT IS OCCUPANCY DETECTION?

Most of these sensors available in the market today are based on PIR (Passive Infrared) sensors. Due to the apparent disadvantages of PIR sensors (requiring large motion constantly), some companies have started to make hybrids or “dual technology” sensors using either Ultrasonic or Microphonic technology paired with PIR. Most of these sensors cost around $140, which is about 10 times more costly than a standard PIR sensor.

However, even with dual technology, the rate of miss detection (not detecting presence) and false detection (detection when it shouldn’t) were unacceptable in certain environments. Sudden, fast movements or extremely slow movements will not be detected by the PIR motion sensor. Leaving A/C on or TV on in the room would also falsely trigger the Ultrasonic (sound) sensor even when no one is in the room.

A new technology has entered the market for intelligent occupancy sensing – IR-UWB Radar. Unlike PIR or TAS, it is completely free from heat and light interference. Rather than using infrared, heat, sound or any other type of cameras, it uses impulse radio frequencies to scan for micro-vibrations – 1 million times per second. The result? As long as you are breathing, or in the case of LEVEL 3, as long as you have a heart beat, XANDAR will identify you.

It includes using thermal insulated umbrellas, hiding behind furniture, hiding behind cardboard boxes, hiding inside a bag, hiding behind a wooden plank, lying flat on the floor, slow-crawling and even holding your breath. All this is done with a 0% miss-detection rate and a 0.002% false alarm rate.
