Most of these sensors available in the market today are based on PIR (Passive Infrared) sensors. Due to the apparent disadvantages of PIR sensors (requiring large motion constantly), some companies have started to make hybrids or “dual technology” sensors using either Ultrasonic or Microphonic technology paired with PIR. Most of these sensors cost around $140, which is about 10 times more costly than a standard PIR sensor.
However, even with dual technology, the rate of miss detection (not detecting presence) and false detection (detection when it shouldn’t) were unacceptable in certain environments. Sudden, fast movements or extremely slow movements will not be detected by the PIR motion sensor. Leaving A/C on or TV on in the room would also falsely trigger the Ultrasonic (sound) sensor even when no one is in the room.
A new technology has entered the market for intelligent occupancy sensing – IR-UWB Radar. Unlike PIR or TAS, it is completely free from heat and light interference. Rather than using infrared, heat, sound or any other type of cameras, it uses impulse radio frequencies to scan for micro-vibrations – 1 million times per second. The result? As long as you are breathing, or in the case of LEVEL 3, as long as you have a heart beat, XANDAR will identify you.
